26 Oct HAIRSTYLIST SPOTLIGHT: JAY WEE

How did you start?

After finishing a certificate course in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines in 2009, I started collaborating with makeup artists, stylists and photographers to create my portfolio. While doing so, I also did the hair for our shoots since I am also fascinated in doing hairstyles. Before I know it, I had more hairstyling portfolio than my clothing designs! So in 2010, I sent my portfolio to a fashion magazine and booked my very first beauty editorial. Since then I pursued being a hairstylist and did numerous work for magazines, advertising, tv & film; even weddings and pre-nup shoots.

Where do you buy your tools and products?

I usually do my hairstyling product hauls when I get to travel overseas. My favorite shopping destinations are Seoul, Japan and the US. Here in Manila, I buy from Beauty Bar, Suesh, Rustan’s and even the SM Beauty Dept. Store!

Top 5 must have in your kit?

1. blowdryer
2. velcro rollers
3. roller brush
4. tail comb
5. hairspray

What’s is the best hair advice you know to be true?

Keeping the ends healthy promotes better hair growth; it is best to get a trim every other month.

Favorite brands and why?

GHD hairstyling tools – they have the best blowdryers, hair straighteners and curling irons that gives volume and shine to hair than any other tools I’ve used.

TGW Coconut Lime Beach Waves spray – organic and vegan, one of the best sea salt spray I tried and I love the coconut scent!

L’oreal Paris Boost It High Lift Creation Spray – long lasting finish for back combing hair! If you’re obsessed with volume then this is your best friend!

Missha Procure Transtyle Holding hairspray – amazing flexi-hold and scent! One of my favorite Korean hair products~ I hoard them whenever I visit Seoul.

The Face Shop Quick Hair Puff – recently hair makeup shadows/concealers has become popular. Korean brands like Innisfree & Etude House launched varieties of these but Faceshop’s has to be my favorite because it is highly pigmented and does the work in seconds!

Famous clients?

My celebrity clients includes: Angel Locsin, Marian Rivera, Maja Salvador, Chesca Kramer, Liza Soberano, Julia Barretto, Maine Mendoza, Jolina Magdangal and Jodi Sta. Maria.

Secrets you wouldn’t share with others?

I actually like sharing techniques to other hairstylists, in fact I want more artists from younger generations to be passionate about hairstyling because the industry needs more of us! If there is one tip I always share is that one has to have a really good foundation on blowdrying. Its one of the basic skill that will never fail when doing hair.

Whose hair would you love to do?

REGINE VELASQUEZ and J.Lo!

How do you keep up with new trends?

I check runway shows and backstage clips every season. I always look up to the works of Guido Palau and Orlando Pita.

What are the techniques from the past that you cannot live without ?

Blowdrying! haha i cant say it enough~ when you have the perfect blowout, the possibilities are endless and BACKCOMBING of course.
