14 Jul MAKEUP ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:MAWS DIAZ
How did you start?
It all started when I decided to change careers in 2012, after I graduated from a make up school. It was a big move because shifting careers was never easy. Each step you have to go through can lead to either success or failure. I was already in a managerial position in the BPO industry during that time, but opted to purse may passion in Make Up Artistry. I’ve been doing freelance make up for almost a year and have been collaborating with different artists then. I found out through Facebook that Make Up For Ever was relaunching and was open for hiring. Since I was an avid fan of the brand and their artistry so I expressed interest for the post and luckily I was hired. I started as a Beauty Expert and Resident Make Up Artist. I was assigned in their Greenbelt branch. This was my first job in the retail industry, I could say technically, no professional experience in sales. But with my love for makeup, I never considered this as a weakness. Instead, I used it as my motivation to do better, to aim higher. I became one of the artists who does make up for photoshoots, theatre play, fashions shows and events. I have utilized all opportunities to enhance my craft, and then I was promoted as Trainer.
Where do you buy your makeup?
I used to buy from Sephora US, Camera Ready Cosmetics and Nigel (all online). I usually ask my dad to buy and ship the products to me. But now that I’m working for Make Up For Ever, I don’t think there’s a need for that.
Top 5 Must-haves in your kit?
My top 5 must-haves are (1) Mist and Fix with 10 drops of Aqua Seal, (2) Ultra HD Lip Booster, (3) Camouflage Corrector Palette # 5, (4) Ultra HD Foundation and (5) Aqua Brow Corrector
For prep I do the following steps:
For the face
1. I use mild cleansers to clean and remove any make up residue.
2. After cleaning the face, I apply Embryolisse lait crème to moisturize the skin then gently massage the face in circular and upward motion
3. If the skin is dry, I would apply Step 1 Nourishing Primer or Ultra HD Skin Booster
For the lips
4. To exfoliate the lips, I use the Nourishing primer first and then scrub the lips using a spooly in a circular motion.
5. Lastly, I apply Ultra HD Lip Booster/Lucas Papaw Ointment
Favorite makeup brands and why?
MAKE UP FOR EVER because of its wide variety and high-performance products. It really gives us professionals the tools we need to unleash and discover new ideas in creating make up looks. In terms of quality, textures, colors, longevity and the results it gives, this brand really stands out! I also like the fact that their products were created by an artist and an educator, which gives us professionals inspiration to make you embrace your form of art.
I’ve done make up for celebrities and personalities but I usually work with Katarina Rodriguez and Isabel Oli.
Secrets you wouldn’t share with others?
In terms of makeup, I really don’t have a secrets at all since I am an educator. But just like everyone else, never would I share my passwords and pins. I guess that would be my best kept secret…lol
Who would you love to put makeup on?
I would love to do make up for Celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Queen B!
How do you keep up with new trends?
Aside from updates I get from Make Up For Ever, I also do research and read about upcoming trends for the year through fashion websites. I check and follow IMATS, well known professional make up artists, make up bloggers/make up gurus on social media.
What are the techniques from the past that you cannot live without?
I guess the technique of having a good base because that will make the make up last longer. So preparing skin is really a must. Making the skin supple and well hydrated will make the make up adhere longer than usual. So, before applying any product I usually prep the face with moisturizing cream then spray with Mist and fix and then layer it with hydrating and radiant primer.
If the skin is really dehydrated, dry with open pores, I usually rub a small ice cube all over the face and this will instantly tighten the skin making the pores less visible.
Another is using a flat foundation brush and a wet sponge. I use the brush to layer (dab and glide) and the sponge to set the foundation.
